An Interview with Personal Trainer Bal

How long have you been doing personal training and what first made you want to be a personal trainer? I’ve been a personal trainer for 6 years now and absolutely love my job.  I wanted to become a personal trainer due to my passion for fitness.  From a young age, I have always been into sports and when old enough going to the gym.  For the past 17years, I’ve trained at lots of different gyms from your commercial fitness first and Nuffield health clubs to your local independent bodybuilder type units.  I’ve found that training at different types of gyms enabled me to train with a multitude of people who all contributed to the wealth of knowledge I have today. Having my own personal trainer in the past helped me make the decision of sharing my knowledge with others to help them attain their personal fitness goals.

Whats your favourite part of the job? My favourite part of being a personal trainer is reaching my client’s goals and expectations.  I am a very results driven person, when my clients talk to me about their goals I make them my goals and take them very seriously.  I love my job and find it very rewarding especially when clients work hard and take their goals as seriously as I do.  If getting in shape was easy I think everyone in the world would be walking around with their idea of a perfect body.

And any bits that are not so great? The part of my job that’s not so easy is changing mindsets of people to break the bad habits.  You cannot control peoples mind, you have to adapt to every individual client’s thought process to help them change their mindset to aid the results.  You cant be in this job with a one style fits all attitude as everyone is individual.  I do feel that social and public media and quick fix diet companies can have a negative effect on people nowadays.  I feel it can pressure people into thinking they need to look a certain way and expect overnight results without health considerations.

What question do you get asked the most by clients? How much weight can I lose within 4 weeks or a certain time frame? Whats the best exercise to make my stomach flatter? Can I eat chocolate and sweets with my diet?

Which type of exercise do you think is the best for all-round fitness? I think using different types of interval training is key for all-round fitness.  I find by using variations of HIIT with clients they benefit from it a lot.  This can be things like Tabata training, Regular Interval training, AMRAPS (As Many Rounds As Possible), Fartlek (Irregular intervals).  You have to find ways to keep the body guessing and out of its comfort zone, again otherwise if it was easy then everyone would be walking around with perfect bodies.

If you could have three wishes what would they be? To be a recognised brand within the fitness industry within the UK, to walk around with perfect abs all year round and world peace
